Creative Bridges
Someday all this may be ruins over which pelicans will fly, but for now it is a place where history is still unfolding.
News stories: legitimate stress and the refusal to attend to the well-being of other selves. This is what I read between the lines each day.
I grew up in proximity to a mercurial megalomaniac who was addicted to his personal gain above all else. I understand what it’s like to feel paralyzed in times like these—scrolling, worrying, failing to figure out what’s coming, and how bad it will get.
Someday all this may be ruins over which pelicans will fly, but for now it is a place where history is still unfolding. Today is also the day of creation. — Rebecca Solnit, Hope in the Dark
It matters what we put our attention on.
We are continuing through a time—all times are end times—when our birthright of creativity is paramount. There is no condition—personal, social, political—that is not made worse by accumulated, undigested stress. Stress narrows our thinking and keeps us tuned to our fears and limitations; stress is the acid that corrodes our instinct for community and innovation.
Vedic Meditation rebuilds what stress erodes: our ability to respond from our vast inner quietude rather than panic. Twice a day, non-negotiable, we take it as it comes. This attitude, practiced daily, promotes stress release and the development of equanimity.
We notice, with time, our own capacity to be informed without being broken by circumstances.
We stop doomscrolling and start noticing someone near us needs a bridge out of their contraction, a stranger beside us needs what we could easily give.
But we can’t build bridges from panic. We can’t yell for kindness and stability when we ourselves are shaky and coiled. Our mirror neurons do much more work than our words. Access our own creative will, then help others find theirs.
Through the long corridor of history, every global disruption reminds us that we have person-to-person work to do. Not political systems saving us, but individuals willing to stay grounded while engaging. To hold space for fear without drowning in it. To remember that creativity is our birthright, not our luxury.
Today, and tomorrow, are days of creation. Start, take a breath, start again.
If you have a practice, regularity wins the race! If you don’t have a practice and want an expert teacher, reach out. How I love teaching this dogma-less technique.
